New technologies have been consistently advancing many products in a vast number of industries such as communications and entertainment, this is also true for security. The under vehicle inspection system, or more simply UVIS, has made some serious advancements in this industry. In the beginning it was just handheld wands with convex mirrors attached. Next came electronic undercarriage systems that produced white-an- black images of the underside of vehicles. Systems we use today scan the undercarriage within seconds, produce color images, have quick processing capabilities, and even come as mobile units.
These new systems provide the employees who operate them a safer work environment. They remain a safe distance away from the vehicles passing over the UVIS and receive scans to their computers allowing them to quickly receive information and act accordingly. With the old system of the wand and mirror, undercarriage inspectors had to be right next to the vehicle, which could essentially put them in harm’s way. Additionally, contraband could sometimes be missed. With the new technology both of these issues have been rectified.
This is also true for the image quality. What were once grainy and unclear black-and-white photos are now in full color and completely clear. It does not matter the speed in which a vehicle travels over the UVIS, perfect images will be taken every time. The color and clarity allow personnel to quickly distinguish foreign objects, and act to remove the threat or contraband. This was simply not possible with the older two methods.
Before the advancement of UVIS technology, checking the undercarriage was extremely time consuming and led to traffic build ups, and lengthy wait times. Due to pressures to speed up, some vehicles were not even scanned, utilizing the judgment of the staff to assess possible threats. Now a scan of each vehicle takes mere seconds, it processes the images and delivers them seconds later, and personnel can examine them quickly and efficiently, leaving no vehicle unchecked.
The other great thing about UVIS is you can choose between permanent and mobile devices, this was previously not available with the other methods. For those who have fixed locations where these are needed daily, the permanent option is the best choice. The mobile devices are perfect for those who need them for special events such as fairs, concerts, festivals, and more where undercarriage security systems are not already in place. The technological advancements in this arena have made providing security to the masses a much easier thing.
